I have known Trish for a few years now, we met at a game night through Toronto Boardgame and Social, a meetup.com group. When I met her, she was a bigger girl (weighing over 200 pounds at 5’2”), but her personality instantly won me over, and she is as they say “not just a pretty face”, she’s a smart cookie too.

Trish and I have realized through getting to know each other that we have a few things in common. We talk about some of them here (including us both suffering from chronic migraines), and Trish explains a bit about her job (she is a prosecutor).

The main focus of this episode however, is Trish’s personal experience in deciding to get surgery to get her weight under control and investigating her options. OHIP (Ontario’s Health Insurance Plan) tried to steer her (and everyone else) into getting a Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass procedure, but she found through her personal research (including medical journals) that it has a high failure rate and some really negative side effects which people are not properly informed about prior to surgery (assuming they don’t do their own research). She decided that her best bet was the Duodenal Switch procedure, but you can’t just request it because it is a rare and difficult surgery to perform. So she had to advocate for herself. And she did, successfully.

Trish shares with me her story, her experience, her research and her advice for others.

The 3 procedures that Trish talks about are:
Duodenal Switch - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duodenal_switch
Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleeve_gastrectomy

Intro/Theme Music: “Noise in my Head” by Clarknova from the album “Annexia”
Voice-over bed music: “The mark has been made” by Nine Inch Nails from the album “The Fragile”, Disc 2 (Right).

I first met Heather a few years ago when she worked at Drake International. She was running a job search workshop that I attended. We connected on Linked-In and now a few years later I stumbled back upon her profile. I was very excited to see what she was up to and wanted to talk to her about it.

The interview went really well, I almost didn’t even need to ask any prepared questions as Heather was very articulate and insightful. She made it very easy and I can’t thank her enough. Her story is both interesting and inspiring and she gave some great advice for aspiring entrepreneurs.
It was my pleasure to interview Heather and I hope the connect as many interested parties with her as possible to help make Ladies Learning Code and Hacker You a great success.

Michael is my longest running current friend. We met a little over a decade ago and bonded over a mutual interest in Battletech/MechWarrior.

We have always had interesting discussions on a variety of subjects as we both read alot, and Michael was one of the only two guests on the original iteration of this podcast.

Michael went to University and earned an Honours Degree in Criminology, Justice and Policy Studies. We talk about what criminology is, the direction taken in regards to crime management by the Canadian Government, courtrooms, the difference between Canadian and American courts, learning styles and left-handedness (Michael is left-handed, I’ve adapted to be partially so due to issues with my right arm),
